A group of mentees from New Orleans–based 501(c)(3) organization Son of a Saint was welcomed to Avondale, Louisiana, this week by T. Parker Host, owner of the former Avondale Shipyard now known as Avondale Global Gateway, in order to provide them “an inspiring, hands-on exploration of the maritime industry.” The event built on the ongoing partnership between Host and Son of a Saint, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of fatherless boys through mentorship, support and education. Earlier this year, Host sponsored a Son of a Saint mentee with a $20,000 donation.

“Through this partnership, we aim to foster positive change in South Louisiana by equipping the next generation with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in our industry and beyond,” said Host Chairman and CEO Adam Anderson. “Mentorship plays a transformative role in shaping the future workforce, especially in industries like the maritime sector, where the transmission of knowledge, skills and values is key to long-term success.”

Host purchased the former Avondale Shipyard in 2018, acquired foreign-trade zone subzone status for the property’s 254 acres in 2019 and reopened it as a multimodal logistics hub Avondale Global Gateway in 2022. The project was part of Site Selection’s November 2023 coverage and rankings of FTZs, which found Louisiana high on the list.

As if often does, the fact-checking process this week led Site Selection to discover a new data resource. Maintained by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the GMF Technology Semiconductor Investment Tracker does exactly that: It tracks and continuously updates the semiconductor industry projects now landing in the United States and in Europe sparked by those markets’ respective incentives. The data are available in spreadsheet and map formats.

Family-owned German construction firm Kranverleih Haslach recently deployed two Liebherr cranes to install 10 prestressed concrete trusses weighing just under 100 metric tons apiece at a new Getzner textile factory in the Austrian town of Bludenz, located at the foot of the Vorarlberg Alps. “The hall floor with full cellar running underneath and the limited footprint made the deployment a considerable challenge,” said a Liebherr release. Ceiling supports were placed in close proximity throughout the cellar, the two cranes shared the weight of each truss in tandem at max capacity, and the positioning had to be done with radio communication due to an intervening wall.
