Word on social media has it that Electric Owl Studios in Atlanta, in keeping with its sustainability goals, has welcomed an organizational beehive (okay, it’s technically an apiary) onto its campus thanks to working with Bee Downtown. We love it when two we’ve profiled in the past get together in the present.

If equity issues factor into your location decision-making, the increasingly robust Black Wealth Data Center is a tool you can use. The racial wealth equity database allows any user, free of charge, to “dive in and access national and county-level data that compares how race influences education, employment, asset ownership and other indicators that contribute to wealth.” Among the reports using the database is a new study analyzing how the legacy of redlining influences heat island and tree canopy effects. The database was launched in September 2022 by Bloomberg Philanthropies' Greenwood Initiative.

PHOTO OF THE DAY

Tomorrow is Flag Day in the United States. This photograph made in March 1943 by Marjory Collins shows what Library of Congress records describe as an unnamed “Italian-American woman, with two sons in the Army, at the Annin Flag Company trimming threads from a finished flag for the government.” The image is part of the Farm Security Administration - Office of War Information photograph collection in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs division.

A sixth-generation family-owned business, Annin Flagmakers has been “making the U.S. Flag since 1847 and is the oldest and largest flag manufacturer in the United States,” having produced the flags for Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration and casket; the flag U.S. Marines flew at Iwo Jima; and flags that flew on the moon, among others. The company produces 4,000 products, all made in the USA by more than 500 employees. Headquartered in New Jersey, the company today has factories in South Boston, Virginia (its largest); Cobbs Creek, Virginia; and Coshocton, Ohio. Among its services, Annin offers this guide to flag etiquette.
