Speaking of Kentucky, a certain Run for the Roses is scheduled to take place there this
coming Saturday. Exactly 20 years ago when Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby, Jack Lyne
documented the story “Beyond Smarty’s Derby Party” from the lush, rolling hills of
Gainsborough Farm to policy debates about industry incentives in the state capital of
Frankfort. As for Smarty Jones, he went on to almost capture the Triple Crown (finishing
second in the Belmont Stakes), earned more than $7.6 million for his owners and today stands
for a stud fee of $3,500, having sired 36 stakes winners.
