Oxford University and the International Monetary Fund yesterday launched PortWatch, described as an open platform designed to monitor and simulate trade disruptions to maritime trade flows. As of this morning the site was monitoring 1,378 ports and 13 chokepoints, as well as effects of past and forecast extreme weather events. “Shocks to trade and supply chains can propagate rapidly around the world, leading to economic disruptions and real impacts for people. Using PortWatch we can track shipping disruption at ports and in critical shipping lanes around the world, providing up-to-date information for decision makers,” said University of Oxford Professor of Climate and Environmental Risk Jim Hall.

Coalescence is the name of this installation by British designer Paul Cocksedge, whose Paul Cocksedge Studio has been nominated for Dezeen Awards 2023 designer of the year. The piece hung and illuminated inside Liverpool Cathedral is made with more than 2,000 pieces of coal weighing more than half a metric ton, which Cocksedge said “is the amount of coal consumed by a 200-watt light bulb if illuminated for a year,” Dezeen reported.
